Second-half rally sends Pearl River to 62-60 win over Suffern
Calise scores 19 points in the second half for Pirates
PEARL RIVER -- Suffern opened the second half on fire, stretching its lead to double digits and on the verge of ruining Pearl River's Senior Night.
Sensing the game getting away from his team, Pearl River coach Jerry Houston called a time out to settle his team down and made an adjustment. This adjustment initiated a Pearl River rally that would carry the Pirates all the way back.
Junior guard Anthony Calise was at the center of this, scoring all 19 of his points in the second half, giving Pearl River a 62-60 victory in a Conference IV non-league game.
Luke Houston finished with 18 points as the Pirates won their fourth consecutive game, improving to 10-6 overall. Mike Davis added eight points and 10 rebounds, but, more importantly, played a solid game defensively against Suffern's power forward Marley Anthony, holding him to six points. Anthony has been a consistent double-double producer this season.
"After Suffern opened the second half on an 8-0 run, we went to a man-to-man, full-court press to make things happen," Pearl River assistant coach Chris Woolgar said. "Anthony (Calise) and Joe (Clinton) did a great job deflecting passes or getting their hands on them."
Calise drained a 3-pointer from 23 feet with under one minute remaining to give Pearl River the lead for good. Davis converted two free throws with 10 seconds on the clock, raising the lead to five points.
As good as Calise was offensively, Woolgar credited his front line of Davis and the Donovan brothers, Matt and John, with playing excellent against Suffern's twin tandem of Alushula Odongo and Anthony.
"Coming into the game we knew that Anthony and Odongo were huge offensive threats," Woolgar said. "All season long Mike (Davis) has been our go-to guy to lock down the opposition's biggest threat. John and Matt also did an excellent job on Odongo."
Odongo finished with 15 points, John Brennan scored 14 points and Dashawn Wood had 11 points.
