PEARL RIVER -- After a good start to the season, Pearl River had been struggling as of late, winning two of its last eight games.

To compound matters, undefeated Spring Valley was coming in today, looking to continue its winning ways.

Through two quarters, Pearl River held a one-point lead before taking charge in the third quarter.

The Pirates outscored the Tigers by 15 in the third and it would be the difference in a 68-53 Conference IV American League win.

Michael Davis led Pearl River (6-6) with a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds and point guard Luke Houston contributed 21 points and six rebounds. John Donovan collected 12 boards.

Pearl River, which scored 21 points in the pivotal third quarter while holding Spring Valley to six, had an advantage at the free-throw line. The Pirates sank 29 free throws, including 11 from Houston, to Spring Valley’s 14.

“It was a great team effort,” Pearl River assistant coach Chris Woolgar said. “We shot 29 of 41 from the foul line and did an excellent job on the boards against a very physical Spring Valley team.

“Senior forward, Michael Davis, led the Pirates with a great all-around game offensively and defensively. John Donovan did the dirty work down low adding 10 rebounds himself, to go along with a solid performance from guard Luke Houston.

"The last game we played them we led in the fourth quarter, but we got hurt rebounding late."

Davis gave Pearl River a lift in the opening seconds of the third quarter, swishing a 3-pointer to send the Pirates on their way.

"That pumped up the team," said Woolgar of Davis' triple. "Our guys did a good job of attacking their high man-to-man defense and when we were driving the ball to the basket, we were taking care of it and finishing."

Nikolas Perez had 17 points and Tevin Mackey added 14 points for Spring Valley (10-1).
