Pearl River makes 9 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter against Nyack
PEARL RIVER -- Each day in a Pearl River boys' basketball practice, coach Jerry Houston has his team work diligently when it comes to free throws.
"Each player has to shoot a certain number of free throws in practice between drills," Pearl River assistant coach Chris Woolgar said. "The players average from 50 to 60 free throws a day."
This attention to detail resulted in Pearl River staving off a hard-charging Nyack, 65-61 yesterday in a Conference IV National League game.
Luke Houston finished with a game-high 27 points, including his second consecutive 11 for 12 showing at the foul line. In his last two games Houston is 22 of 24. Pearl River (7-6) went 9 for 12 from the line in the fourth quarter and was 18 of 23 overall. On the other hand, Nyack converted six of eight free throws.
Nyack trailed, 36-21 at halftime, but the Indians came out in the second half and began lighting it up from behind the 3-point arc. Nyack went 5 for 7 from three range in the third quarter, including thre from Dean Lothrop. The Indians pulled to within three points with less than two minutes remaining, but Houston went 4 for 4 from the line. Along with the free-throw shooting, Woolgar pointed out that Mike Davis and John Donovan had huge offensive rebounds to retain possession.
"For most of the fourth quarter we handled their pressure well and did a good job of ball reversal and movement against their zone," Woolgar said.
Anthony Calise added 17 points for Pearl River.
Dave Albert led Nyack with 20 points, Kivar Thurman contributed 15 and Dean Lothrop had 11.
